Car Seat Breathing

SIDS & RTA Statistics

Every time a newborn passes in the UK a coroner has the duty to establish the cause of death. If a cause is not identified the death is recorded as SIDS but in the majority of cases a cause is established and in relation to newborns breathing & respiratory difficulties are the most common cause of death.  Obviously these deaths are not recorded in the SIDS statistics.

Whilst road traffic accidents are the biggest killer of children under 14 this is not true of children under 4.  Using 2012 statistics from the Office of National Statistics, The Lullaby Trust and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health here are the stats.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome...............................................  265

All deaths (babies under one year of age).................................  2912

Road Traffic Accident Deaths, (babies under one year of age)........ 0

Road Traffic Accident Deaths, (children 1-4 years of age).............. 3

We all want to eradicate deaths and injuries to children.

Given the above statistics it is obvious where we now need to concentrate all our efforts to reach our goals.

Without question, newborns in semi upright car seats are a clear target in helping to reduce SIDS and other newborn deaths.
